Donor: ISSMGE TC 203 Earthquake
Advancements in earthquake geotechnical engineering over the last half-decade have largely benefited from records of ground shaking. Without measurements of actual earthquake shaking, the field remained qualitative in nature. With measurements of ground shaking a wide range of ground motion models were developed to estimate key parameters. Seismic site effects were demonstrated when nearby seismometers are different ground recorded significantly different ground motions. Moreover, this particular seismometer was donated by Prof. Pinto to represent TC203. It was taken to each specialty conference location as a symbol of TC203. Due to the cost of shipping it and restrictions with carrying it on a plane, it has been retired and it finally resided in Japan. It has been shipped one last time to Vienna to be put into the time capsule.
